Research Interests

  • Applied mathematics: Emergence and swarm intelligence, Mathematical models for cell biology, specially those where chemotaxis place a central role, interaction between math biology and themathematical analysis of intelligent materials.
  • Pure mathematics: Non-linear parabolic and elliptic PDEs, Blow up problems in fluids, Navier-Stokes equations, Pattern formation, Variational Analysis, sharp conditions for global existence and blow-up in drift-diffusion systems, asymptotic methods, Childress conjecture on the Keller-Segel model and their generalization for several chemotactic species.

Personal profile

Elio E. Espejo joined the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) in February 2020 as an Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics. He has a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Leipzig and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences, Germany, and a Master and a Bachelor in Mathematics from the National University of Colombia. He was a researcher fellow at the laboratory of biotechnology in Chile University, in the mathematics department of the Israel Institute of Technology, Technion in Haifa, Israel and the Osaka and Kyushu Universities in Japan. Elio was awarded in 2015 with the US$50.000 grant repatriation program in his country Colombia, where he spent two years working as a researcher at the National University of Colombia. Before arriving at UNNC he was working in the North University, in Barranquilla, Colombia.

His principal research interests involve the theory of partial differential equation and its applications to mathematical biology, for instance, cell motility, tumor growth, chemotaxis and fertilization processes.
