2021-22: Nominated for the Lord Dearing Award (Individual).
I joined as an Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Nottingham Ningbo-China (UNNC) in 2021. Prior to this I was an Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Before I was a Research Fellow within the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham, UK working in the development of mathematical and computational models at the Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Systems Medicine (ICSM) under the directorship of Professor Jonathan G Hardman. I had completed my Ph.D. programme at the UON under the supervision of Professors John R King at the Centre for Mathematical Medicine & Biology (CMMB), School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Nottingham, UK.
My research interests include computational clinical medicine (optimal treatment strategies) and mathematical biology (systems biology, drug delivery, tissue engineering and cell signalling, spatial ecology, and eco-epidemiology) and My publications have collectively been cited more than 1726 times, and my current h-index is 25 (h-index is 19 excluding self-citations) and i10-index is 38. There are many papers that have been categorized as 3*-4* (according to REF UK).
Recently, one of my research works comes into media attention (Interview with BBC Radio Solent 'legend' Julian Clegg, Newspapers) due to its wide application in intensive care medicine. In addition, I have reviewed a significant number of articles for leading international journals and become a regular reviewer of “American Mathematical Society.” I am an editorial board member of the Journal of Biological Systems and Austin Journal of Pulmonary and Respiratory Medicine. Furthermore, I have been awarded/supported by several grants from the academia and industry including Leverhulme (UK), Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM, USA), UK-IERI, and Ministry of Defense, UK (An Industrial Funder), to pursue different academic activities and research projects. I am also a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, an elected member of the London Mathematical Society, and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, USA.
Expertise Summary
My research is devoted to the development and analysis of mathematical and computational models used in clinical medicine and biology. I have used applied mathematical topics, including nonlinear dynamical systems, ordinary and partial differential equations, numerical analysis, asymptotic and perturbation methods to carry out the requisite modelling analaysis in these two fields. By using a wide range mathematical techniques and transferring the state-of-the-art technologies from control engineering and laboratory experiments into biology and clinical medicine, my research aims to contribute a significant improvement in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of Biological/Medical process that deliver (for medical problems) a significant improvement in diagnosis and treatment of several diseases. My research also goals to generate predictions that can be experimentally verified particularly for systems biology and medical problems. A number of clinical applications of the results of my mathematical modelling are used on the patients at the Hospitals by the clinicians including my own collaborators.

1.Computational Clinical Medicine: By using a wide range of mathematical techniques and transferring the state-of-the-art technologies from control engineering and laboratory experiments into biology and medicine, my research aims to contribute a significant improvement in the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the medical process that deliver a significant improvement in diagnosis and treatment of several diseases. For instance, we proposed and tested the integrated (multi-organ) computational model for its robustness and credibility by generating a spectrum of disease states that represent blast lungs (BL), COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), ARDS(acute respiratory distress syndrome), VALI (ventilator-associated lung injury) and compared them with the human/animal data from the UK Hospitals and published literature. This research has delivered a significant improvement in understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of BL, ARDS, COPD, and VALI. Finally, this project aimed to design protocols to test investigative and therapeutic strategies in BL/ARDS/VALI/COPD victims such as fluid resuscitation, fluid withholding, and ventilator strategies. Several medical applications of the results of our mathematical/computational modelling (particularly, those that are consistent with the animal experimental results carried out by our collaborators) are in the application on the patients at the intensive care unit (ICU) in the Hospitals.
2.Mathematical Modelling of Systems Biology: Dynamics of Gene Regulatory Networks and cellular signaling and its consequence of environmental hazards caused by chemical mixtures, soils, and waters. This research concentrated the study on the animal stress-response gene regulatory network by seeking to predict the consequence of environmental hazards caused by chemical mixtures (typical of pollution). Multiple Stress-Response Networks have been monitored during single and combined chemical exposures in transgenic strains of two invertebrates, Caenorhabditis elegans, and Drosophila melanogaster. We proposed and analysed a few different mathematical/computational models that describe four different stress response gene networks and through a combination of analytical and numerical methods, we studied these models to gain insight into the effect of several stresses on gene networks. In two mathematical models, we were able to verify the theoretical predictions with the corresponding laboratory experimental observations carried out by my experimentalist collaborators in Britain, Canada, and Italy. My models are based on sets of mathematical equations and experimental data that simulate key biological processes and are used by pharmaceutical companies to accelerate their internal drug discovery and development programs.
3.Mathematical/Statistical Modelling Ecology and Epidemiology: The ecology and epidemiology research aims to the integral biological process of the predator-prey food chain, epidemiology, eco-epidemiology, chaos, diffusion, and pattern formation in ecology and epidemiology, and control of diseases in agricultural and natural eco-systems.
