Abstract

This paper presents multi-domain design considerations and a configuration selection study for 5kW 120krpm synchronous machines used within an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based engine waste heat recovery system (WHR). A multi-domain design environment is used to compare various PM machine configurations including different pole numbers and different winding types. In light of the investigated multi-physics considerations a 4-pole, 24-slot distributed wound surface PM machine is found to be the most suitable and is prototyped and tested.
