Abstract

Prognosticating the future of Chinese cinemas is a massive task, but during the conference, three themes stood out: movements, genres, and intermedia. It considers how Chinese films have been conceptualized, examined, and communicated domestically and abroad, engaging with how Chinese film and Chinese film studies are currently developing by analysing the plurality, vitality, and hybridity of Chinese cinema in the 21st century. Prognosticating the future of Chinese cinemas is a massive task, but during the conference, three themes stood out: movements, genres, and intermedia. All three categories provide ways of examining not only how Chinese film and Chinese film scholarship have formed but also how they may develop in the future, as cultural productions as well as producers of culture. This chapter focuses on recent high-grossing animations that revitalize historic traditions through intertextual adaptations that have been modified for contemporary audiences.
