abstract = "Insight into the suitability of building rating systems and its application is pertinent in deciding the best assessment approach that suits building evaluation standards in China. Hence, this report presents a comparative study of universally accepted building rating schemes (BREEAM, LEED and Green Star) concerning the goals, criteria and certification standards in China. The comparison was conducted by normalizing the different score ratings accredited to each assessing criteria: energy, environmental, engineering and economic (4E). Furthermore, using a highly rated hotel in China as a case study, the applicability of each rating system is discussed by the content of related documents issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China. The obtained results establish that the 4E assessment standards in China match that of the BREEAM In-use and LEED (O + M) rating systems. Here, environmental > energy > engineering > economic benefits is observed. In the absence of a comprehensive building assessment approach in China, this report identifies interrelated factors that will guide building stakeholders towards selecting the most appropriate rating system.",
