Abstract
This paper describes the investigation on the effect of hydroxylammonium nitrate (HAN) concentration towards the electrolytic decomposition and ignition of HAN solution using graphite electrodes. In previous work, the decomposition reaction of 80 % HAN solution was found to consist of two stages when using graphite electrodes. The behavior of the two stage decomposition changes with the change in HAN concentration. In 60 % HAN, the potential has to be applied three times in order for the autocatalytic decomposition to occur. In 90 % HAN, decomposition of HAN solution occurred in a single stage instead of the two stage. Increased HAN concentration decreases the electrical energy deposited into the HAN solution. 80 % HAN is safer to handle and gives similar performance compared to 90 % HAN.
