Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new design of on-ramps, which can enhance the free way capacity at the on-ramps. In the new design, when a vehicle reaches the end of the merge region and still has not found a large gap available on the main road, it enters the loop structure instead of stopping at the end of the merge region. In this way, large disturbances on the main road are avoided and no queue will form in the merge region, consequently high level of capacity may be maintained.
