Abstract
This chapter discusses the environmental sustainability of liquid–liquid separation process. Advancement of technology is the main contribution in terms of environmental sustainability. Even in the separation process industries, it holds a significant role as innovative separation method is used to replace conventional separation method. Environmental impacts of both conventional separation and modern separation techniques are discussed alongside with their respective industrial applications. Conventional separation method such as infusion, decoction, maceration, etc. are mentioned and discussed. While among the modern separation method, microwave-assisted extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, gravity separation, coalescing separation are discussed. Besides that, the conventional and modern separation methods are compared and discussed. In addition, a few examples of industrial application that enforce environmental sustainability are elaborated in the chapter as well. The chapter also discusses on how modern separation is in favor for environmental sustainability when compared to conventional extraction method.
