Abstract

As the next generation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), enabling data from richer sensors and maximizing the capability with large-scale probabilistic machine-learned models has immense potential. The laser scanner is a widely used and advanced sensor in the UAV area. However, to avoid catastrophic crazy flies, the real-time deadline is always hard to meet with exponentially complex algorithms based on laser scanners. To thoroughly squeeze the computational- and data-light performance, this paper presents an overview of the usage of laser scanner information for indoor UAV flights, where the intensity and multi-echo information are mainly focused. Then, we demonstrated a ROS simulation experiment of map creation with analytical steps to support the evaluation of indoor UAV-flights suitability. Finally, based on the survey of the current state of these technologies, the transition possibility can be explored to consider the future direction of the relevant research areas.
