Abstract
Scientific analysis of vitreous materials can provide a wide range of information about the raw materials used to make them, the source of those raw materials and the provenance of the materials. In addition, if the full range of steps involved in the production of materials are defined as a result of excavating a production site, scientific analysis can create the links between the raw materials, vitreous products and by-products. Moreover it is possible to define why materials have a particular color. To have its fullest possible meaning, the interpretation of the analyses of well-dated vitreous artefacts should be set within a full social, economic and political context. © 2008
