Abstract

Although nascent research has examined the consequences of the perfectionistic personality in organizations, understanding of whether pursuit of perfection may give rise to employee compromised ethical decisions remains limited. This paper seeks to untangle if, when, and why employee perfectionism leads to cheating at work. Based on multiple studies, we find employees high on perfectionistic concerns (versus perfectionistic strivings) to experience more fear of performance failure, which in turn, results in workplace cheating. In addition, we discover supervisor bottom-line mentality as an important moderator. Supervisor bottom-line mentality exacerbates concern perfectionists’ fear of performance failure, leading to more cheating.
